Patch

• A patch is a flat, generally greater than 1-cm area of skin.
• With your eyes closed, you cannot feel the involved area or discern a boundary to the lesion. A patch may have non-palpable fine scale.
• The lesion is a different color than the surrounding tissue:
  • Hyperpigmented – darker lesions
  • Hypopigmented – lighter lesions

• 

  Sharply demarcated hypopigmented patch of vitiligo.

• 

  Scattered hypopigmented patches in pityriasis alba.

• 

  Round hyperpigmented patch in fixed drug eruption.

• 

  Irregular pigmented patch of melasma.
