Macule

• A macule is a flat, generally less than 1-cm area of skin or mucous membrane.
• With your eyes closed, you cannot feel the involved area or discern a boundary to the lesion. There may be non-palpable fine scale.
• The lesion is a different color than the surrounding tissue:
  • Hyperpigmented – darker lesions
  • Hypopigmented – lighter lesions

  Myriad light brown hyperpigmented macules in Peutz-Jeghers syndrome.

  Axillary freckling in neurofibromatosis.
