Patient History and Physical Examination

AD is a clinical diagnosis. Ancillary tests, such as a biopsy, may help establish a diagnosis of atopic dermatitis or exclude conditions that mimic this condition.

Make sure to obtain an adequate childhood and family history of allergies, asthma, and skin disease.

In general, it is rare for an adult without a personal or family history of atopy to develop atopic dermatitis.
